Preventive Care

Smiles for Centreville advocates preventive care in Centreville, Virginia, and surrounding areas. Preventive care is an extremely important part of our philosophy, and is crucial to maintaining good oral health throughout your entire life. In addition to your homecare routine, our dentists try to have all our patients on a recare system for regular cleaning and exams. We invite you to contact our practice today at 703-830-9110 to learn more about family dentistry and to make your appointment with Drs. Hutchison, Gorman, Mooney, or Grossman.Periodontal disease is the most common disease in America. Periodontal disease is often painless and can lead to the loss of teeth. Our hygienists check our patients for periodontal disease at their cleaning appointments. We do periodontal treatment in our office. This could include deep, thorough cleanings called root debridement therapy, localized antibiotic therapy such as ARESTIN®, or the Perio Protect® system of delivering medicaments to the mouth. Many times, periodontal disease is localized to a few teeth. Your dentist and hygienist will provide you with a treatment plan that is right for you.Our office utilizes the Kodak digital radiography system. Digital radiographs use much less radiation than standard film. We take bitewing X-rays on a yearly basis to check for decay between teeth and a full panoramic X-ray every three years to check for permanent teeth in children, wisdom teeth, and the structures surrounding the teeth. We also utilize the VELscope® oral cancer screening system at Smiles for Centreville. The VELscope uses an ultraviolet light to look for the presence of abnormal tissue. If abnormal tissue is found, a biopsy is recommended. Oral cancer has a very high success rate of survival if caught early and a poor survival rate if found in the later stages. We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity of early detection to our patients!Adjunctive medicaments are given to our patients for many concerns. Fluoride is used to treat sensitive teeth, high decay rate, dry mouth, and decalcification. We also use MI Paste™ to help remineralize small lesions of beginning decay, lighten “white” spots left by orthodontics, or reduce cold sensitivity. We have fluoride products that help to reduce the bacteria level in the mouth to help with periodontal disease. ARESTIN is a locally placed antibiotic to help with periodontal pocketing. Your hygienist and dentist will recommend these products as needed.
